The Museum of National History – Frederiksborg Castle

Art, culture and history is gathered at king Christian 4.s renaissance castle, which is one of Copenhagen suburban’s finest museums.

A journey though time

A tour of Frederiksborg Castle’s many beautiful rooms is a journey through 500 years of Danish history. The story is told through portraits, paintings, furniture and decorative arts and on your way you will meet kings, queens, nobles, bourgeois, all of which have helped to shape Denmark’s history and development from the middle ages to the 21st century.

Royale chambers
The extravagant renaissance building with its many spires and towers were built by king Christian 4. In 1859 there was a fire that destroyed much of the castle’s interior, but you can still find chambers that tell the story of the king’s castle. The Chapel and the Audience Chamber survived the fire and the two rooms, one from the renaissance and the other from thebaroque, are some of Denmark’s finest preserved royal interiors.

Beautiful gardens of yesteryear
Frederiksborg Castle has a stunning baroque garden and a landscape garden, each representing different perceptions of nature. The baroque garden was originally built in the 1720s by King Frederik 4 and restored in the 1990s. The landscape garden was built by Frederik 7 around 1800, and represents the romantic style. A walk in the gardens offers beautiful views of the castle and you can sail on the lake or hike all the way around the castle area.
