The Hirschsprung Collection

The Hirschsprung Collection is beautifully situated in the green parklands of the Østre Anlæg on the old ramparts of Copenhagen. The museum houses a great collection of Danish art - primarily from the Golden Age.

A treasure filled with Danish art

The Hirschsprung Collection is filled with major works from the history of Danish art. Here you enter a treasure trove of Danish paintings with works from the Danish Golden Age, Skagen painters and symbolism. You will be overwhelmed by the beautiful, impressive and groundbreaking paintings from the 19th and early 20th century. The exhibition is a journey from canvas to canvas through a time period where romanticism, naturalism and modernism left their mark on Danish art.

Romantic landscapes
The Hirschsprung Collection is the private art collection of Danish tobacco manufacturer Heinrich Hirschsprung, which he donated to the Danish state in 1902. The exhibition gives visitors a chronological overview of Danish painting by artist like C. W. Eckersberg, Christen Købke, Anna Ancher and Johannes Larsen. In the museum’s beautifully decorated rooms you can explore the Danish Golden Age and enjoy Eckersberg’s studies in model painting and his fascination of the antique or get a sense of romanticism by admiring the ideals in landscape paintingsby J. Th. Lundbye.

Danish art in a time of change
An important part of Danish art history are the Skagen painters including Michael and Anna Ancher and P. S. Krøyer. The group distinguished itself by painting realistic studies of nature and people as well as the hard life of the fishermen by the shores of the little Danish town Skagen. At the Hirschsprung Collection, you can experience a large number of paintings from this group of artists and the museum holds one of the largest collections of works by P. S. Krøyer.
