The Glyptotek

Glyptoteket presents the largest collection of ancient art, French art and Danish Golden Age art in a frame where even the architecture and the interior is unparalleled in Denmark.

The art world
The man behind the Glyptotek, Carlsberg breweries’ own Carl Jacobsen, was one of the1800’s big tycoons and patrons of the arts. He created one of his era’s greatest private art collections. The brewer was a passionate collector and nearly squandered his entire fortune to create the exceptional collection of art and artifacts.

Scandinavia’s largest collection of ancient art
At the Glyptotek you can gain insight into the ancient Mediterranean cultures where Europe has its artistic, philosophical and political roots. World renowned Greek and Roman sculptures can be seen side by side with mummies and funerary objects from ancient Egypt. Follow man’s trail through 6,000 years from the early empires in the Middle East, Egypt to Greece and the Roman Empire.

Major works of French Impressionism
Carl Jacobsen managed to bring together works from his time’s great artists and created a magnificent collection of modern French and Danish art. The Glyptotek houses the largest collection of Impressionist art and masterpieces. You can see the works of artists such as Manet, Monet, Degas, Sisley, van Gogh, Cezanne, Rodin and Picasso. Particularly noteworthy is the collection of Paul Gaugin’s work, which is one of the world’s finest.
