The Øresund Aquarium

The Øresund Aquarium in Elsinore is a small and professional saltwater aquarium focusing on the Danish marine life. You can experience the fantastic world below Øresund’s surface and touch sharks, crabs and sea stars; you can catch crabs and watch the sharks being trained; and during the summer months, you can join the aquarium’s guides on whale watching trips and experience Denmark’s small whale, the harbour porpoise.

A short walk from the Castle of Kronborg and the Danish Maritime Museum and placed by the northern port of Elsinore you find the Øresund Aquarium. Here competent guides tell the story of Øresund’s diverse marine life and they are always available to answer any questions you may have about the fish and animals. More than 30 tanks show the Danish marine life and display the surprising diversity you find below the surface of the strait between Denmark and Sweden – Øresund.

Touch the animals – and watch a shark being trained
The big children’s touch pool is divided into 3 levels with different heights so even the very small children can reach in and touch crabs, flatfish, sea anemones and urchins. Every day at 11 am the fish and animals is this pool are fed and everybody can help – this activity is very popular among children and adult alike. Thereafter there are public feedings every hour on the hour and the aquarium’s guides tell interesting stories about the animals they give food.

Even in the big stone reef tank you are allowed to touch the fish – here the playful rays and small sharks often welcome a stroke on their backs. In this tank, the zookeepers will train the sharks which is a fun activity to watch.

Crab catching, seining – and other fun activities
The Øresund Aquarium is specifically fun for children. Its manageable size is one reason but also because its structure and activities always consider children. During all holiday seasons the aquarium offers special children’s activities such as for example special Touch the Living Marine Life that takes you behind the aquarium’s scenes; crab catching at the harbor; seining at the nearby beach; and guided tours to the aquarium’s new Water Laboratory where you look at Øresund’s life through water binoculars. Fun for the children but also very entertaining for adults.

Boat safaris on Øresund – watch small whales, big tuna and marvelous sea birds
During the summer season you can join the aquarium’s guides on a boat trip on Øresund and look for Denmark’s small whale, the harbour porpoise. In the autumn, the aquarium offers safaris where we look for the great Atlantic tuna, which is back in the local waters after several decades of absence. The aquarium also sails out watching the many sea birds that live and visit the area around Elsinore.
